The New Jersey player had a successful career at the felt

Dan Sewnig, a well-respected online poker player from New Jersey, passed away earlier last week at the age of 33. Sewnig, known in the poker community by his online handles “mj23style” and “RedsoxNets5,” had a successful career with over a million dollars in online earnings. His unexpected death on August 13 has left the poker community in shock.

Sewnig’s love for poker began at a young age. He was first introduced to the game by his cousin when he was just 11 years old. His passion grew quickly, and by the time he was in seventh grade, he was already playing $5 sit-and-go tournaments with his friends. One of his early memories of poker was watching Chris Moneymaker win the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event, which sparked his dream of making it big in the poker world.

After graduating from Ramapo College of New Jersey with a degree in math and a concentration in education, Sewnig initially planned to become a teacher. However, the newly regulated online poker market in the Garden State offered him an opportunity he couldn’t resist. He soon found success, becoming one of the top online players in the region. Sewnig’s dedication to the game was evident, as he once shared, “I’ve put more work into studying and improving over that timespan than I have in the rest of my career combined.”

His poker achievements were many, including a World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOP) ring victory in 2022, which earned him $12,107. He also had deep runs in the WSOP Main Event in 2021 and 2022, finishing 79th and 112th, respectively. Despite the ups and downs of the poker world, Sewnig maintained a positive outlook and was known for his kindness and sportsmanship. As fellow poker player Asher Conniff remarked, Sewnig was “one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.”

Sewnig’s death has prompted condolences from the poker community, including Chris Hunichen, Christian Harderm, Daniel Strelitz, Jeff Stellwagon, Mike Holtz, and Ryan Feldman, His legacy in the poker world will be remembered not only for his skills at the table but also for the kindness and generosity he showed to others.
