Steve O’Dwyer, Dara O’Kearney and others dropped in for the Punters vs. Pros event
The Dublin City University (DCU) Poker Society recently hosted a special “Punters vs. Pros” poker tournament, creating a memorable night for its members. The event brought in some of the biggest names in poker, including Steve O’Dwyer, PokerStars ambassador Fintan Hand, Dara O’Kearney, and Thomas Murphy. For many students, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share the table with professionals at the top of their game.
The tournament drew 118 participants, with a buy-in as low as $5. O’Dwyer, a poker legend with over $45 million in tournament winnings, was graciously granted a freeroll entry by the society. The excitement was heightened by a special €20 (US$21) bounty placed on O’Dwyer’s head, thanks to Hand, a DCU alumnus. The relaxed yet competitive atmosphere allowed students to not only test their skills but also learn from elite players.
Despite the casual stakes, O’Dwyer showed why he’s considered one of the world’s best. Navigating through a spirited field, he dominated at the final table, displaying a sharp and focused game that left an impression on everyone. Jack Reynolds, chairperson of the DCU Poker Society, shared how the event allowed members to interact closely with the pros. O’Dwyer even donated his €100 (US$105) prize to the society’s end-of-year event fund, further cementing his connection with the students.
The DCU Poker Society has experienced significant growth in recent years, offering members a mix of casual games and exposure to the professional circuit.
